Belize Bank Sponsors Coca Cola National Spelling Bee Competition

Thursday, April 30^th, 2015. BMG: In a technology era where computers automatically correct our printed words, spelling is an art that seems almost ancient. But for the past 21 years, the Coca Cola National Spelling Bee organizers have been promoting these special reading and comprehension skills to our youths via the schools countrywide.

Since the event’s inception in 1995, it is considered the longest standing educational program in Belize. Founders of the event have carried the tradition for years which seeks to   help students improve their spelling skills, increase their vocabulary, and in turn help them to become better students.

In 2014, the Spelling Bee celebrated its 20^th year and for the first time, its founders, Bowen and Bowen Ltd invited outside corporate sponsors to support the event. This was when the nation’s largest banking institution, The Belize Bank Limited, took the opportunity to expand its existing community involvement initiatives to further support youth development. In its support to the Coca Cola National Spelling Bee, The Belize Bank has committed to a physical presence at the District Finals as well as by way of making a total financial contribution of $13,000 annually to support the initiative.

A portion of this financial contribution goes directly to the first place winner. In the past this has included a two-year sixth form scholarship and this year, the Bank is supporting an educational all-expense trip for two to explore and enjoy Belize’s very own back-yard. The package includes airfare/transportation, accommodations, spending cash, and an educational tour.

“The Coca Cola National Spelling Bee is one of several youth development initiatives and programs which The Belize Bank supports, comments Shakira Tsai, GM of Marketing. “Education and sports are two very important key focuses in building capacity and opportunities for our future leaders. We proudly lend our support, and we wish all participants best of luck as they enter the last round,” Tsai went on to say.

The 21^st Coca Cola National Spelling Bee saw the completion of its District Finals on April 29^th. The grand finale to the competition is scheduled for June 5^th in Corozal Town at the Corozal Community Auditorium.
