The APNU-AFC wins election in Guyana

Posted: Friday, May 22, 2015. 2:01 pm CST.

Friday, May 22nd 2015. BMG:  The APNU-AFC that won Guyana’s elections last week is uniquely comprised of Africans, East Indians, Amerindians and Dougla.

They teamed up for the first time in the country’s history to draw the votes of people looking beyond race, showing a small change in the ethnic voting pattern. The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) which had been in power for 23 years, was being accused of corruption but still seemed confident about a victory, with former President Ramotar saying the election was “free and fair” on the media before the official count was released. granger_swearing_in

Then after finding out that they had been defeated by the APNU-AFC, the Ramotar administration delayed the announcement and called for a recount.  An upset Ramotar ironically made claims that the election process was manipulated after he and his party had already praised it to be ‘free and fair’.

After the results were released, Ramotar wrote: “WE ARE BEING REMOVED FROM OFFICE, NOT THROUGH THE WILL OF OUR PEOPLE, BUT BY ELECTORAL MANIPULATIONS.”

Despite the claims made by the PPP, the international observers from various countries that were sent to ensure a fair election process in Guyana declared that it was indeed a transparent one and urged Ramotar to accept defeat and allow the new President, David Granger to take office.

A former member of the PPP, Moses Nagamoottoo who is of Indian decent, is ready to become Guyana’s next Prime Minister, which would make an administration reflecting the country’s diverse composition of ethnicity.granger_swearing_in2

Granger, who was a second Lieutenant in the Guyana Defense Force and graduated as valedictorian from the University of Guyana with a degree in History, was sworn in on Saturday as Guyana’s eight President.

During the swearing in ceremony, Granger said he that he will be a good president for all the people of Guyana and called for an inclusionary democracy as the best way to fix the country’s division.
