Attorney denies professional misconduct

Monday, June 8^th, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: Marcel Cardona, accused of perverting the course of justice and bribing and conspiring with judicial officers, faces a reported one-year suspension to be affirmed by the Chief Justice after a report by the General Legal Counsel.

But not only does Cardona say he was not aware of any proceedings against him, he denies writing the email that precipitated the entire affair.

Speaking to a local media house late last week, Cardona says he was “taken completely by surprise” at the news reports as he had received no notification of proceedings against him from official sources.

He claims that the decision came from the disciplinary committee of the Bar Association and he has yet to see the exact form.

Cardona added that he is “fully prepared to be able to substantiate everything that was charged to that client, everything for services,” and thus denies overcharging the client. He also denied writing the email claiming that he had to bribe some officials to secure bail faster and said his staff denied doing so as well. Cardona says he is convinced that the email “is a fabrication intended to injure me and I intend to challenge that.”

The aggrieved party has reportedly publicized the documents involved.

Only one other attorney has ever faced suspension from legal practice.
