Saturday, June 13th 2015. BMG: The People’s United Party (PUP) is still assessing whether they will contest the bye-election in the Dangriga constituency.

The bye-election is scheduled for July 8th and the assessment has still not been completed. According to a local news report, the assessment isn’t just a stalling technique but it is serious and active and meetings are still being held.

If the PUP decides to not contest the bye-election, and no other independent challenger appears, then Frank Mena, the UDP candidate would become the new representative for the Dangriga division. If this happens, then it will be a terrible day for democracy in Belize.

According to the PUP, the bye-election will not only cost them money that they do not have, but it will accomplish very little in shifting the balance of power one way or the other.

The way how it is looking right now, the PUP might just not contest the election.
