hit and run

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015. BMG: Vallan Paul Cucul, a caretaker from the Toledo District, was the victim of a fatal hit and run on the George Price Highway on Saturday, June 9th.

Reports are that Cucul was riding his black and red beach cruiser bicycle in Camalote Village when he may have veered into the highway and was hit from behind by a vehicle, killing him on the spot.

Police received the call around 7:00 p.m and their investigation led them to the house of Minister John Saldivar’s driver, Orlando Castillo who was arrested and charged after it was determined that he was driving a Volkswagen Jetta car.

The vehicle in question belongs to the Ministry of National Security and when he hit Cucul Castillo did not stop to render aid. The car had minor damages to its front portion and Castillo was arrested on the same night of the incident and was charged by police on Sunday for:

Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct, Drove Motor Vehicle without Due Care and Attention, Failed to Stop and Render Aid, Failed to Report an Accident and Failed to Provide a Specimen, either blood or urine sample.

Castillo was formally arraigned in the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was offered bail of $8,000 and is to reappear in court on September 7th 2015.
