Thursday, June 18th, 2015. BMG: The Belizean public is still in jubilation after the Belize National Football Team raised victory flags over the Dominican Republic.
Celebrations have been soured however, after the Federation expressed lack of funds to prepare or participate in the third round of the World Cup Qualifiers. President of the Football Federation of Belize, Ruperto Vicente, was approached to elaborate on the plans for our national team.
According to Vicente, the FFB stated that they could only afford to finance the team up until the second round. The Federation would have to depend on Government or utilize fund-raising from the public in order to finance further, as there simply is not enough funds in the Federation’s coffers to support the National Team.
So far, the FFB has spent close to five hundred thousand dollars in support of the National team. Although the public has assisted immensely with the first two qualifying rounds, it is with financial support from the Government that Vicente hopes to propel the National Team forward.
Vicente met with Minister John Saldivar on Tuesday to discuss financing issues. A budget is being done for the third qualifying round, and it is expected that the FFB will receive the necessary assistance from the government.
