High school student shot Monday night

Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Aaon Humes Reporting: Police have detained three persons pending investigation of a shooting incident in Belize City this morning.

The victim is a 15 year old boy identified only as Tyreek. According to police he was walking on Lakeview Street in the direction of Vernon Street around 8:30 Monday night when someone approached him from behind and fired once, catching him in the top of the head. The teenager is in recovery, condition reported to critical but stable.

The news comes as a shock to classmates and teachers at the school he attended, Caanan Seventh Day Adventist High School, whose vice-principal, Jaime Roberts, said students thought their friend had died. While he has not, the school is reeling, as he was not known as a troublemaker.

Second form homeroom teacher Maybelline Campos says the crime epidemic has touched students in her homeroom in a unique and devastating way. Many of them live in crime-ridden areas and are afraid to go out at night or into rival areas lest they be targeted.

According to Campos young Tyreek was not a troublemaker or known to be involved with gangs and similar activity; he even got along with those in his class who were. Campos offered her sympathies to his family.

The 15 year old remains hospitalized at KHMH.
