PM answers PUP questions about Guatemalans being given citizenship

Thursday, July 02, 2015. BMG: The meeting of the House of Representatives was interrupted on Friday when the members of the opposition stormed out of the house after an incident which was allegedly staged as a form of protest.

Despite that incident, many topics were still touched in the sitting and one of the questions asked by the People’s United Party was in regards to the amount of Guatemalans that became Belizean citizens in 2014.Barrow-ninth

In the absence of the Minister of Immigration, Hon. Godwin Hulse, the Prime Minister took the podium to answer that question, saying that a total of 104 Guatemalans were sworn in as Belizean citizens after renouncing their Guatemalan nationality and completing the necessary processes.

PM Barrow went on to say that swearing ceremonies were held for the sake of completeness and a total of 439 people from various countries became Belizean citizens over the course of 2014.

The PM finished by providing a full break down of the countries and amount of persons that were sworn in and it is as followsHondurans, sixty-one; Salvadorans, thirty-seven; Chinese, thirty-four; Americans, thirty; Mexicans, eight; Lebanese, five; Jamaicans, four; people from Liechtenstein, one; two from the Philippines; nine from Nicaragua; nine from India; fourteen from Nigeria; three British persons; two from Pakistan; two from Panama; three from Columbia; two from Taiwan; one from Belarus; one from Canada; one from Syria; one from Trinidad and Tobago and three Venezuelans.”
