Cuban men and woman jailed for illegal entry

Thursday, July 9^th, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: A group of Cuban men and a woman began six-month sentences on a charge of illegal entry after not being able to pay the mandatory fine.

27 year old Glendis Candero; 28 year old Libon Rosales; 23 year old Ruben Palma and 33 year old Pedro Martinez were found on a passenger bus going west to east toward Belize City Wednesday afternoon when police stopped the bus at a checkpoint at Mile 4, George Price Highway, and detained them.

The group told the Immigration Department that they came into Belize from Guatemala crossing the banks of the Mopan River.

Their stay here will be longer than expected, but still definite, as after Magistrate Stephanie Gillett handed down the $1,000 fine following their guilty pleas, they were not able to pay immediately as ordered and were taken to Central Prison to begin their sentences.

Following the completion of those sentences they will be expelled from Belize.
