PG Town Council truck caught illegally dumping garbage

Posted: Tuesday, July 28, 2015. 10:08 pm CST.

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015. Chrisbert Garcia Reporting: Punta Gorda Town community activist, politician and conservationist Wil Maheia has exposed what he says are long-standing violations of the law on illegal dumping of garbage by the Punta Gorda Town Council (PGTC).illegal dumpong

On Facebook, Maheia posted a picture of the Council’s truck dumping a large load of town garbage on the roadside near – not in – the official dump-site three miles outside town and less than a mile from the Rio Grande River. He had followed the truck and caught the sanitation worker in the act.

When Belize Media Group spoke to Maheia about the issue this evening, he told us that he has been trying to shine light on this matter for quite some time now because the PGTC has been committing illegal acts and should be dealt with just like any other citizen would be dealt with for breaking the laws of Belize.

Maheia went on to say that the Department of the Environment’s television commercials clearly state that it is illegal to dump garbage on any roadside, furthermore, the garbage is affecting the nearby river which is used for fishing.

Mr. Maheia is calling the attention of all conservation NGO’s and the Department of the Environment to put a stop to this problem which has been ongoing for years in Punta Gorda and is hazardous to people living in the surrounding area of the dump-site.
