Monday, August 31st, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: 20 year old Malik Jair Dixon of Mahogany Street succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained when he crossed the path of a rival on Saturday night in Belize City.
Officer Commanding Eastern Division (South) Senior Superintendent of Police Chester Williams says he was walking near the Administration Complex when he met his attacker. He tried to run but wound up being shot and dying in hospital.
According to Williams police are closing in on a suspect of interest. While it appears that gang rivalry may be an element of Dixon’s death, Williams believes his criminal past, if any, had no relevance to why he was targeted.
But because gangs are involved, the senior officer says the Department will be doubling down on its strategy of keeping the gangs communicating with police and focused on a positive way. That cooperation continues despite their “patience being tested” as Williams described it.
Senior Superintendent Williams also rued the limited police presence at the Mahogany Street precinct station, a block from the scene of the incident. He revealed that he too was in the area and responded to the scene, but not quickly enough to catch the killer.
In related news, Sr. Supt. Williams announced some progress with relation to the murder of Kareem Clarke in July though he kept the details to himself, promising a formal report later in the week.
He said for now that Dixon’s murder is not related to Clarke’s.
