BEL explains weekend blackouts

BEL logoWednesday, September 23rd, 2015. BMG: After two Independence weekend blackouts, one on Sunday night and the other on Monday, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) released a statement explaining what is causing the recent string of power outages across the country.

According to BEL, an “unidentified fault” is the cause of the Sunday night outage at 11:30 p.m., which affected Corozal, Orange Walk and San Pedro. Power was restored in just a few minutes but BEL hasn’t been able to find the fault which they believe is somewhere in the Belize District.

The second weekend blackout was on Independence Day and affected Western, Central and Southern Belize from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. That outage was caused by an accident in Benque Viejo which damaged a lamp post with high voltage lines.

Using backup supply from Blair Athol Power, BEL restored power to all areas between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., except for a portion of Benque Viejo Town which was restored at 5:00 p.m.
