CWU says GOB “unfair” to BTL employees in settlement

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: There was an outpouring of support from sister unions for the Belize Communications Workers Union (BCWU) audrey maturaafter their stinging press release attacking Government last week for failing to consult employees of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) before reaching a settlement with the former owners including the BTL Employees Trust chaired by former BTL chairman Dean Boyce.

Christian Workers’ Union president Audrey Matura-Shepherd said the settlement has far-reaching consequences for both BTL shareholders and employees – the money comes from their hard work and investment.

As for the especially biting comment that the current administration is no better than the PUP for its treatment of the workers, Matura-Shepherd says that this Government has its own sins to pay for – its disclosure of the settlement does nothing to lessen its sour taste.

BTL management has rapped the Union for its response but asked for dialogue. BTL’s annual general meeting is next week.
