Posted: Thursday, October 8, 2015. 10:13 am CST.

Thursday, October 8, 2015.  BMG: 54 year old Honduran national Jose Rodriguez, a truck driver, has been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct and driving without due care and Jose Carlos Rodriguez for fatal traffic accident at Mahogany Heightsattention in connection with Monday’s road traffic accident on the George Price Highway that claimed the life of 11 year old Tezzrah Diamond Thompson.

Thompson, a student of St. Matthews Government School was knocked down on Monday evening sometime around 3 pm as she alighted a bus with her schoolmates at the entrance of Mahogany Heights. As she tried to cross the road she was hit by a truck. Thompson sustained serious internal and physical injuries and she died around five Tuesday morning.

Police say that it’s an unfortunate case where the child did not look both ways before crossing but they insist that the driver should have slowed down, especially since a school bus was parked on the side.

Today Rodriguez appeared before Magistrate Ladonna John where he was read the three indictable traffic offences. No plea was taken from him since the matters will be tried at the Supreme Court at a later date.

In court, there was no objection to bail being granted to Rodriguez; however, the prosecutor was concern of his status.

Rodriguez’ family provided the court with his passport that shows that he is a Honduran by birth, but a naturalized Belizean living in Belize for 23 years.

He was granted bail by Magistrate John of $3,000 plus one surety on the condition that he not leave the country while his case is before the court or else his bail will be revoked.

Rodriguez was able to meet his bail and he is not due back in Court #4 until January 7, 2016.
