Fisheries holds consultation with fishermen

Tuesday, November 24^th, 2015. BMG: The Belize Fisheries Department is inviting fishermen that use Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve and South Water Caye Marine Reserve to attend a community consultation, where the re-adjustment, possible expansion and creation of zones within three targeted protected areas will be discussed.

This comes as part of the Marine Conservation and Climate Adaptation Project’s (MCCAP) objective to implement priority ecosystem-based marine conservation and climate adaptation measures to strengthen the climate resilience of the Belize Barrier Reef System.

It will benefit three protected areas, namely: Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve, and South Water Caye Marine Reserve and will support improvement of coral reef protection, as well as enforcement of laws to benefit replenishment zones.

Consultations will only be conducted in Northern Communities at this time and consultations in Southern Communities will be announced at a later date. The schedule for Northern Communities is as follows:

Belize City on December 1, 2015, at the Northern Fishermen Co-operative Conference Room, 9:00 a.m.

Sarteneja Village on December 2, 2015, at the Sarteneja Community Center, 9:00 a.m.

Copper Bank Village on December 3, 2015, at the Copper Bank Inn Conference Room, 9:00 a.m.

Chunox Village on December 3, 2015, at the Chunox Community Center, 2:00 p.m.

Corozal Town on December 4, 2015, at the St. Francis Xavier Credit Union Conference Room, 9:00 a.m.
