Questions linger surrounding Youth Hostel fire

Posted: Monday, November 30, 2015. 2:05 pm CST.

Monday, November 30th, 2015. Chrisbert Garcia Reporting: The charred remains of 16-year-old Anna Melinda Carlos, 16-year-old Shadisha Arnold and 14-year-old Elizabeth Mckoy, were foundhostel fire inside the Princess Royal Youth Hostel on Saturday after the blaze was extinguished by fire department personnel.

Police responded to the scene at around 2:29 p.m. and saw a green building on the compound, engulfed in flames, as the three females were trapped inside. Initial investigations revealed that the girls were inside the building when one of them reportedly lit a pillow with a lighter she had.

The fire then reportedly got out of control so quickly that no one was able to open the door and save the teenagers, leaving them to suffer an unimaginably painful death. Accounts from staff members at the facility, state that attempts were made to break down the door and free the girls but questions quickly arose from the general public on social-media asking how it was possible that authorities at the hostel didn’t have a key to open the door.

Another question being widely asked on Facebook demands an answer as to how the girls were allowed to have a lighter in their quarters; and since all three of them perished inside that room, how does the staff know what started the fire, as given in their accounts?

Police investigations into the incident continue as the Belizean public awaits the results of what is suspected by hundreds on Facebook, to have been caused by foul play.
