Christmas cheer program not as big this year

Posted: Tuesday, December 1, 2015. 3:16 pm CST.

Tuesday, December 1, 2015.  BMG: Every year, many Belizeans benefit from the Christmas Cheer program, through which they receive financial assistance from area representatives to make the holiday more joyous.  DEAN barrow 1

In previous years, there was almost unlimited money to share with people across the country, given to area representatives and care takers for distribution, but this time around, the Prime Minister (PM) says the giving will not be as generous as past times, since there are many additional liabilities and projects the government is undertaking.

In an interview with the media, PM Dean Barrow said that the Civic Center is costing more than $33,000,000, the three tourism roads will be costing a handsome amount of money as well, the arbitration award with respect to the shares acquisition in Belize Telemedia Limited will also cost some cash and if Petrocaribe funds remain after dealing with those liabilities, he wants to do some debt buyback

The PM did say though, that despite the decrease in finances for social programs, enough money will still be set aside to continue them, just not at the level seen formerly.
