Sugar-00012By BMG Staff: Recent rains have caused major problems for the sugar industry as it has been announced that production is down and a decrease has been noticed in the tonnes of cane to tonnes of sugar ratio, which is really bad news for investors.

This problem stems from the amount of mud within the cane being harvested, which reduces the amount of sugar yielded through milling. It was almost two weeks ago that the sugar crop opened at Tower Hill factory in Orange Walk and reports of wet and muddy sugar have already surfaced, so the Sugar Cane Production Committee (SCPC) has sent out a notice to farmers, encouraging them to make their best attempts to reduce mud levels in the cane.

In addition to that, the SCPC has sent out test group leaders to educate the farmers on implementing the right methods of picking up, loading and stacking of cane to reduce the amount of mud in them.
