American pleads guilty to causing traffic accident

By Aaron Humes: 50 year old American national Stephen Lowe of Utah in the United States pleaded guilty today to charges of negligent harm and driving without due care and attention.

Lowe told Magistrate Carlon Mendoza that he took responsibility for his actions in causing an accident on the Philip Goldson Highway, when he collided into a grey Chevy HHR SUV driven by Turkish national, Cuneyt Kumsal, who sustained injuries such as abrasions to his left hand and forearm and bruises and swelling to the face and both hands. Howe, a Belizean resident who drove a black KIA sportage, avoided injury.

Magistrate Mendoza, after hearing mitigation on Howe’s behalf from his attorney, Andrew Bennett, fined him $75.00 for driving a motor vehicle without due and attention and $200 for negligent harm to be paid by February 5, 2015, in default 2 weeks and 2 months imprisonment, respectively. Howe has since paid the fines.

The already deadly highway has claimed as many as four lives in the first week of the new year, but on Thursday, January 7, 2015, around 7:00 a.m., police responded to information received of a road traffic accident on the Philip Goldson highway and upon their arrival, they saw Kumsal’s vehicle with extensive damages on the entire front door and windshield and Howe’s vehicle with damages to both door side front and rear door and both were parked facing the opposite direction.

Police’s initial investigation revealed that Kumsal was driving his vehicle toward Belize City and upon reaching in front of Low’s Supermarket, as he was overtaking a passenger bus that was parked on the shoulder of the road, the Kia Sportage drove in front of his vehicle from a street that runs beside the supermarket and unto the highway and collided into his vehicle driver’s side.
