Tourist dies while snorkeling in Belize

By Chrisbert Garcia: While on a snorkeling tour at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve near San Pedro Town yesterday morning, a 58-year-old American National of Minnesota, Jeffrey Thomas Bartl, drowned just 15 minutes into the trip, before a tour guide could have rendered assistance to save his life.

Police were called to the San Pedro Polyclinic around 10:15 a.m. where officers saw Bartl lying dead. Police later learned that he along with his brother Clayton and two friends went snorkeling with tour guide Alfredo Trejo sometime before 10:00 a.m., then just 15 minutes later, Bartl was seen with his head submerged in the water.

Trejo then called for assistance from the park rangers to take Bartl’s body out of the water but CPR couldn’t save his life and he was pronounced dead at the San Pedro Poly Clinic at 10:00 a.m.

The body was then transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where a post-mortem examination was conducted and certified the cause of death as “Asphyxia due to drowning”.
