Briceño sworn in 02By Aaron Humes: The Honorable John Briceño was sworn in as Leader of the Opposition by the Governor General today during a ceremony in Belmopan at Belize House.

Among those present to observe the proceedings was Briceño’s family and Friends and parliamentarian Honorable Cordel Hyde of Lake Independence. Briceño spoke about the daunting task ahead of him, which he says he takes on with a lot of hope.

Briceño says his first order of business will be to meet with the PUP parliamentarians to address several issues including the composition of House committees and decide on whether new senators will be chosen then get ready for the Budget debate.

With a new leader of the opposition and party executive, the House can look forward to changes in the seating arrangement of the PUP parliamentarians. Meanwhile, Hyde was present for Briceño’s swearing in, but was missing at the victory rally that Briceño held in Orange Walk Sunday and his installation at Independence Hall last week.

He was asked about his absence there and presence at the swearing in and pointed out that while he was invited today, he is not a national executive member. Hyde says he does share Briceño’s optimism of bringing the party together after the convention. He also affirmed his belief that Briceño can accomplish that task.

As to Hyde’s position in the party, he said he had an early chat with Briceño after the convention but that it’s early in the game, and ultimately, the role he will play is up to Briceño and then agreed upon thereafter.

For his part, Briceño reiterated that Hyde must play an important role in the party.
