La Ruta Maya is coming!

By Aaron Humes: Friday, March 4 is the start of the Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge.

The 17^th edition sees hundreds of canoeists paddling the Belize and Macal Rivers from San Ignacio to Belize City, commemorating ancient Maya civilization’s legacy. The festivities begin with a “Cultural Night” in San Ignacio, Cayo District, on Thursday, March 3, starting at 7:00 p.m.

The race features multiple categories, from elite males and females to amateurs.

The crews will stop in Banana Bank, Double Head Cabbage and Burrell Boom before the big sprint to Southern Foreshore, near the Bliss Center, on National Heroes Day holiday Monday, March 7.

The annual event acknowledges Belize’s ancient Maya’s use of the river for transportation and trading of goods throughout Belize.
