Rene Chavarria shot dead in Ladyville

Aaron Humes: Police from Rural Eastern Division have detained several persons of interest in connection with the murder of 25 year old Rene Sanders Chavarria of Ladyville, Belize District, on Friday night.

Chavarria was riding his bicycle, heading home from the direction of the Phillip Goldson Highway around 9:00 when police say he was approached from behind by two men who opened fire at him.  During this gunfire a minor who was outside his yard was injured to his left leg. The minor was treated and released from hospital.

According to police, Chavarria then ran towards the Caribbean Shrimp Farm and managed to jump over a drain to the right hand side of Marage Road, where he fell in the bushes. His attackers escaped.

Police searched the area near Caribbean Shrimp Farm where two bicycles were found on the street and further searches about 25 feet on the right hand side of the road in swamp, revealed the body of Chavarria lying face down in some water with one apparent gunshot wound to the back of his head, another to the upper right shoulder and a third to the center of the back.

As investigations continue, police recovered an expended shell casing matching a 12-gauge cartridge and two 9 millimeter Aguila brand ammunition, expended.
