Orange Walk man drowns in Progresso Lagoon

8. DROWNINGBy BBN Staff: An orange Walk man drowned on Sunday March 27th at the Progresso Lagoon in the Corozal District.

Police report that the individual, 39-year-old Hermelindo Mai, an Orange Walk resident was socializing and had accompanied a group of eight other men onto a canoe in the lagoon.

The canoe capsized and Mai reportedly went under and never resurfaced.

This was sometime around four in the afternoon and by the time police were informed and arrived at the scene, a party of men were actively searching for Mai in the water. His body was not found until an hour later.

Police do not suspect foul play.
