BDF shooting “perils of enforcement” says FCD

By Aaron Humes: Belize Defence Force soldier, Staff Sergeant Richard Lambey, was shot 4 times on Holy Saturday evening around 4 during an exchange of fire between himself and a Guatemalan poacher in the area of Camp Valentin.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday evening issued a formal statement on the shooting saying that Government requested the OAS Adjacency Zone office to conduct a formal investigation.  We are told that details on the outcome of the investigation will be released to the public as soon as the report becomes available.

Apart from the BDF, another group who has had to deal with encroaching Guatemalans is the Friends for Conservation and Development. Executive Director of FCD Rafael Manzanero told reporters that such things are inevitable because of the resourcefulness and intransigence of the Guatemalans, but that Belize cannot afford to back down.
