By Beverly Vernon: The action is starting to heat up as only four teams stand ready to face off in the Premiere League of Belize (PLB) playoffs round: the BDF FC, Police united, Police FCPlacencia Assassins and Belmopan Bandits.

The first round was played on Saturday night.  Police United traveled to the Michael Ashcroft Stadium to play against the Placencia Assassins. The game ended 3-2 in favor of the Police United. Goals were scored by Devon Makin, Harisson Roches and Amin August Jr.  For the Assassins, Ashton Torres and Mario Villanueva scored.

Then in Belmopan at the Isidiro Beaton Stadium, the Bandits hosted BDF FC. After the final whistle, the Belmopan Bandits came out victorious with a close score of 2-1. Ian Gaynair and Kelvin scored the goal for the Bandits and Ricky Ricketts scored for BDF.

Placencia assassinsOne more round will be played this coming weekend to determine which two teams will move on to the finals. BBN spoke to players from each team who expressed their thoughts moving deeper into the playoffs.

Police United Andres Makin Jr (Captain) said : “It feels great to be a part of the playoffs once again. Our team goal and drive is to always strive for the best and leave it all on the pitch of play.  For us having yet another opportunity to showcase our togetherness in this playoffs is a stepping stone to the championship. That is definitely our main aim this season having qualified for the CONCACAF champions League is a mile stone completed.  Now we all strive for the championship and try our utmost best to win back to back titles.”

Placencia Assassins Dellon Torres (Midfield) said: “We never made playoffs since 2013, so it’s a great feeling to be in Bandits FCit again, especially how we don’t get pay to play football. Barely find time to train but still manage to make it in the final 4.  Our game plan is to leave it all on the field and think about the struggles and the hard work we did to get here. Just give it every bit of energy we have until the last whistle blow.  Whatever the outcome is we will be satisfied because we were always the underdogs heading into the playoffs.  We will use the results as a stepping stone to better our future.”

Belmopan Bandits Ian Gaynair (Defense) said: “It feels good to be in the top four. One, we extend out the season; two, our pay continues; and three, we get closer to the finals.  To win the championship our goal and the game plan is to take it one game at a time.”

BDF FCBDF FC Ricky Ricketts (Defense) said: “The only time we didn’t make playoffs was the beginning of this season. All the other times we made it. The team feels great and very excited and we are training harder to reach finals. We don’t have any game plan as yet. Just trying to reach over the hump first then we will see what happens there.”

All the teams are trying very hard to make it to the finals, so this weekend will be a nail biting one for football fans.
