Aaron Humes: 25 year old David Ortiz of Punta Gorda Town has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in the death of his stepfather, 69 year old David Benguche in March of 2014.  court in session

Ortiz, found to be mentally challenged, was today handed a sentence of 8 years in prison by Supreme Court Justice Dennis Hanomansingh including 2 years on remand.

Benguche was fatally stabbed twice to the left upper shoulder area by his stepson, who was not provoked. The knife used in the stabbing was recovered by police.

Justice Hanomansingh, hearing the case alone in the Dangriga Supreme Court, considered that at the time Ortiz inflicted the fatal stab wounds to his stepfather, he had mentally broken down because he was not taking his medication. He is also a first time offender and cooperated with police during their investigation.

Prosecutor in the case was Crown Counsel, Cecil Ramirez. Ortiz was represented by attorney, Leeroy Banner.
