By Aaron Humes: A traffic mishap this morning across from the bus terminal in Belize City nearly proved fatal for two women coming from the City market.

Police have confirmed that a black SUV reportedly crushed a woman against a lamp post causing her leg to be amputated. A second woman also received minor injuries. The two women were walking toward Cemetery Road at the time.

The incident happened at around 6:30 Saturday morning on East Canal near its junction with King Street, during the peak of the busiest day in that area near the Michael Finnegan market.

Eyewitnesses at the scene according to media reports say that the driver, whose particulars police have not yet released, drove straight onto the sidewalk and rammed into the woman, before coming to a stop.

The driver of the SUV is said to be detained at this time and his vehicle has been impounded. Believing that he may have been under the influence of substances, police have also taken urine samples for testing.
