By BBN Staff: Reports reaching BBN is that a disgruntled group of Guatemalans have sought political assistance in their country to address immigration issues that have arisen at the Belizean western border.
According to reports, a large group of residents of Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala were denied entry this morning at the western border in Benque Viejo Del Carmen because they did not carry with them work permits and were intending to work in Belize. It appears that the residents have been coming into Belize to work without the proper documents and are now finding the new requirements upsetting.
Since then, the group has asked the Mayor of Melchor de Mencos, Luis Amado to intercede and address the matter for them. BBN understands that he has indicated that he will seek a meeting with respective officials in Belize to discuss the matter.
