By Aaron Humes: Two non-Governmental organizations and two Government departments are to receive grants in what has been described as an investment initiative by the Government of Belize.

Rafael Manzanero’s Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) and the Ya’axche Conservation Trust along with the Forest Department and the Belize Defense Force are the beneficiaries.

According to Manzanero, intervention is needed to stop continued depredations of the protected Chiquibul lands from agricultural and forest work, mainly by Guatemalan peasants crossing the disputed Western border.

Further south, Ya’axche is targeting the Bladen, Columbia River and Deep River reserves which suffer from the same conditions such as harvesting of xate.

Both organizations say their partnerships with the Forest Department and BDF will put “boots on the ground” to deal directly with the ongoing problems.
