By BBN Staff: The General Manager of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for Central America, Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic country department, Gina Montiel and Prime Minister Dean Barrow signed today an IDB loan agreement to finance investments to improve the transport, recovery and final disposal of solid waste in towns and villages in Belize’s northern and southern districts and Belmopan.

The five year program is valued at US $10 million and will provide access to sanitary landfill to Belize tourist destinations.

It includes the mile 24 regional sanitary landfill, the construction of a new cell for final disposal, the closure of six existing dumpsites that will be replaced with transfer stations.

The Solid Waste Management Authority (SWaMA) will also be strengthened.

The Government of Belize will provide US$200,000 in local counterpart funding and the executing agency is SWaMA.

The Minister of state in the Ministry of finance, Dr. Carla Barnett and financial secretary Joseph Waight and other representatives from IDB were also present at the signing.
