By BBN Staff: About 25 people, comprised mostly of UDP activists and Ministry of Works employees, and led by UDP Chairman, Alberto August, gathered in front of the Santa Elena Primary School shortly after 9 this morning to protest the closure of school.

The protestors held placards reading “our children’s education is important” and demanding that the gates for the primary school be opened immediately. Protestors are also demanding the resignation of Mr. Manuel Medina, the Principal of the school and current President of the San Ignacio and Santa Elena branch of BNTU.

According to reliable reports reaching our newsroom, the protestors broke the lock on the gate in order to access, and parade, inside the school compound. Apart from this one incident, the protest is a peaceful one.

About 6 police officers were deployed to guard the school’s gate and keep the peace.
