A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister says that Prime Minister Dean Barrow has concluded a second, and wrap-up, meeting with the principals of American Sugar Refining on the sugar industry impasse between Belize Sugar Industry and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association over the issue of payment to farmers for bagasse.
The Prime Minister describes this morning’s meeting as successful.
The American Sugar Refining principals accepted certain proposals made by Government and reiterated their desire and determination to work with Government of Belize and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association to move Belize’s sugar industry forward.
American Sugar Refinery also expressed their gratitude for the Prime Minister’s intervention, and Government of Belize’s leadership in trying to resolve the dispute.
The Prime Minister and his team were scheduled to meet with the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association at 2 pm on Wednesday.
The statement ends by saying that Prime Minister Barrow will report in detail on the meeting with American Sugar Refining and seek agreement for, among other things, a start date for the 2013 – 2014 sugar crop.
