By Patrick E. Jones [607-6777] – The historic Hawksworth Bridge, built in 1949 and spanning the Macal River between the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, has been pressed into service as urgent repairs are being carried out on the low-lying wooden bridge.
But the repair work has had to be put on hold because of flooding brought on by heavy rains which have been falling on the Cayo district since Wednesday.
Motorists are queueing up without incident on both approaches to the Hawksworth Bridge and traffic flows alternately with only a minor delay.
The repairs of the low-lying wooden bridge was scheduled to be completed by December 19; but with the setback brought on by the flooding, it is doubtful that that timetable will be kept.
