Murder in Belize City

Gun violence in Belize City has taken another life, left another family in mourning and the police investigating the homicide.

Leon Giovanni Smith, 28, died a few hours after he was shot as he rode his bicycle on Ebony Street on Sunday night.

Police went to the emergency ward at the KHMH around 7:30 pm where they saw Smith with gunshot wounds to the left side of the chest, upper part of his back and buttocks.

Also seen in the emergency ward was 54 year old Brenda Harmond and authorities say she has a graze to the right side of her stomach.

Initial investigations by police revealed that as Smith rode his bicycle on Ebony Street, he was accosted by a man who fired several shots in his direction hitting Smith multiple times.

Police say that after shooting Smith, the gunman turned his weapon and fired a single shot at the front door of Harmon’s house, grazing her. Smith died while undergoing surgery around 11:10 pm on Sunday.

Police say they have since recovered four 9 millimeter expended shells and one live round of the same caliber ammunition from the scene of the crime.

Investigations continue.
