The Ministry of Health says it is monitoring cases of severe respiratory infections that could be H1N1 which is also called swine flu.
A press release issued today from the Ministry of Health says that in recent weeks there has been “a cluster of patients with influenza.”
Laboratory tests are being conducted to determine whether the cases being managed at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital are the H1N1 strain of the influenza virus.
The Ministry says that since Belize is in the flu season, the flu virus is in circulation and advises Belizeans to practice hygienic measures designed to prevent the spread of the flu virus.
These include washing hands frequently with soap and clean water; coughing and sneezing into your sleeve and not your hands; keeping hands away from your face; keeping common surface areas (such as door knobs, counters) clean and disinfected and is ill, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from spreading infection.
The health advisory ends by asking persons with persistent or worsening symptoms to visit the nearest health facility as soon as possible.
