KIMBERLY LOCKE Reporting: March 1st marks the commencement of Child Stimulation Month under the theme “Where our future begins”.

All Pre-Schools in the Cayo District will be coming together to partake in the different activities that comes with the month.

I had the opportunity to speak with the Early Childhood Officer for the Cayo District Miss Alma Crawford who explained that the annual Child Stimulation is designed to highlight the importance of early childhood education.

Crawford explains that the activities serve to engage communities, encouraging them to get their children enrolled.  As it currently stands, children can be enrolled in a Pre-School from as young as 2 years 8 months.

Preschool is a very important part of a child’s life in many ways. The most important though is for them to socialize. Being around other children teaches them the importance of sharing, playing together and respect.

They are also instilled with the notion of what primary school is all about as many of the areas that are in the preschools should also be carried over to the elementary school system.  The children learn the basic colors, some numbers and letters, shapes and other basic skills.

Many people might think that all the students do at the preschool is play but that is very important as they learn through play.

The Learning Centers that should be in the PreSchools are where most of the activities take place such as the library, sand and water, science, drama, blocks, math, music, art and a quiet area.

I also spoke to Mrs Rosalva Seguro who is the Principal and Head Teacher of the Destiny Pre School in Georgeville village.  Seguro says that for her institution, Child Stimulation month will start with a church service Sunday followed by a parade on Monday.

Other activities for the month include a parent/child talent show on March 12, cultural day on March 14, Festival of arts on March 19, sports day on March 21 and an expo on March 26.

It is expect5ed that the Child Stimulation Month, 2014 will end with a parade in Santa Elena/San Ignacio.
