ORANGE WALK BUREAU Reporting: Police in Corozal do not suspect that foul play was involved in the death of a man who worked as a ferry operator.

51 year old Artemio Vivas fell off the Pueblo Viejo ferry just after two o’clock this morning and drowned in the New River.

And while foul play is not suspected in the unfortunate incident, a sudden rain in the area may have contributed to Vivas slipping and falling into the river as he went to urinate.

According to police, Vivas who lives in Corozal town, was accompanied by his assistant Rolando Alcoser as they ferried a utility vehicle for Belize Electricity Limited from Corozal to Progresso when the incident happened.

Officer commanding the Corozal police formation, Superintendent Andrew Ramirez, says at about the midway point in the journey across the New River, Vivas went to urinate and while doing so slipped and fell into the river.

He did not resurface and his body was retrieved five hours later, around 7:20 am on Thursday.

Artemio Vivas had been manning the Pueblo Viejo Ferry for over 6 years, prior to his demise.
