JUAN CAAL Reporting: Meet Jenny Chuc. She is a resident of San Marcos village in the Toledo district and an avid gardener. Her hard work and dedication to her hobby are what caught our attention and so we decided to have a talk with her.
She approaches what she does with an air of excitement that is hard to understand for someone who is not familiar with what she does. She happily explains that she starts everyday by spending time with her babies, which are her plants.
“I wake up and the first thing I does come out and look how my flowers bloom,” says Miss Jenny, noting that she is working to make her own plant nursery.
Miss Jenny’s project which is located about a half mile in on the San Marcos road is still small, but she has a variety of flowers that are available for sale. These include roses, orchids, cactus and butterfly flowers.
“It takes a lot of hard work and time,” Miss Jenny tells, as she goes about tending to her plants. She says that her children are sometimes jealous because “I tend more to the flowers than to them.”
And while gardening is seen as a hobby for some people, for Miss Jenny, she boasts that it has become more than just a hobby.
For her, it has become her art and “my way of communicating with nature.” She says that “touching the soil, planting new flowers, nurturing my plants, I get excited when I see the flowers sprouting out every morning.”
That process of seeing the flowers growing and blooming is like a spiritual experience for Miss Jenny. “It just gives me that peace that I need to go on with my day,” she says.
Even when the sun is out is all its glory, and the temperatures are scorching, Miss Jenny is always right there taking care of her plants, just like a mother would take care of her babies.
“I want people to know that doing a garden is the best way of relaxing, relieving stress and most of all to feel connected to Mother Nature and the environment,” says Miss Jenny.
She is encouraging other women to get into the habit of gardening and is even offering her expertise to help them get started.
And since she has been gardening since she was a 12 year old girl, there is no doubt a wealth of experience to be shared with those willing to take advantage of the offer from Miss Jenny Chuc of San Marcos village, Toledo district.
