AARON HUMES Reporting: Of the four organizations blasted by Catholic Bishop Dorick Wright in his letter to school authorities declaring that they be kept away from Catholic schools, the Belize Family Life Association came in for the strongest criticism.

It was accused of promoting abortion and sexual rights for very young children.

Today its executive director, Joan Burke, insisted that the Church’s information, especially about reports that it conducted more than 3,000 abortions last year alone, is completely false and slanderous.

The organization, she says, does its work under the laws of Belize.

BFLA’s records cite the actual number as fifteen, says Burke, who contends that the affected women were all referred under the laws of Belize to receive abortions because it was believed that their health and safety, or that of the child, was at risk.

BFLA says it wants to continue its work in schools and has received calls from teachers who are unable to present the necessary information without their assistance.

Burke believes they may have to call on the church for an answer.

The organization claims to have assisted over 13,000 persons last year, mostly with peer education and face-to-face assistance.
