10th Day of Healing held in Taylor’s Alley

Monday, March 31, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: On Saturday the Day of Healing initiative came to Taylor’s Alley, a community whose very name has become a byword for violence.

It was conceived around this time last year as a way for communities affected by violence to promote peace among rival gangs.

It is one reason for the reduction in the crime rate as would-be enemies learn to co-exist with each other.

Perry “Sticks” Smith, organizer, says the event has come to mean much to the various communities it visits.

According to Smith, the heavy Police presence in the area was part of an arrangement to both ensure safety and give the Police’s Community Policing initiative a chance to step forward.

Area resident and organizer Tulio Caceres expressed his pride in his fellow area residents, saying that he hopes more can be worked on in the area.

There were activities for young and old including sports.

The Day of Healing next moves to Gales Point for its first event outside of Belize City on April 19, Holy Saturday, before returning in May and June to the Majestic Alley and Ghosttown areas.

The event and donations are as always, free of charge.
