Monday, April 7, 2014. PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: The two high school students from Corozal who drowned in the Macal River on Friday afternoon have been laid to rest.
They have been identified as 15 year old Anahi Zepeda and 16 year old Edgar Puck, both Fourth Form students of the Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico in San Roman village, Corozal.
Zepeda and Puck were with classmates on a field trip that earlier in the day had visited the Che Chem Ha Caves.
On the return journey, police say that a teacher told them that they stopped so that the students could wash themselves in the river near the low-lying wooden bridge.
While in the river, police say Anahi Zepeda was dragged down by the currents.
Seeing that she was in trouble Edgar Puck reportedly tried to assist Zepeda when they both went under the water and did not resurface.
A search of the area located Puck’s body near the river bank around 4:45 pm.
Zepeda’s body was retrieved further down the river a short time later. Both were taken to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
