Thursday, May 8, 2014. PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: Some family members of a primary school girl from the Maya Mopan area of Belmopan were shocked this afternoon to learn that their pre-teen daughter was the victim of what they originally thought was a traffic accident this morning.
The Standard 5 student of a primary school in Belmopan left home for classes this morning, but just before midday, the family received word that she was at the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan.
The original report was that the girl was the victim of a hit and run accident but soon after the story was first published, word came that there was no accident.
A friend of the family was able to verify that the girl was indeed taken to the Western Regional hospital; but initial information that she was unconscious turned out to not be true.
Following publication of the story above, Belmopan resident Gilda Rahmani posted an online comment in which she explained that there was no hit-and-run incident.
According to Rahmani:
“this happen at about 11:40 am. On my home from picking up my children from the same school that the girl attends, I saw her coming toward the ramp but she miss it and fell on the drain so I stop and others to render help and she was conscious and I ask her for her parents number she said she didn’t know it. So I called the principal of the school to call her parents and meet me at the hospital. I called back the principal and ask if she have notify her parents she said yes they are on their way.”
Belmopan police had told a family friend who was inquiring about the incident that so such report of a hit-and-run had been made at the station.
An officer on duty encouraged the family friend to go in and make a report.
