Thursday, June 12, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: The results for the Primary School Examination 2014 are out and the top performer was Crooked Tree Government School’s Ashton Tillett with 371 points out of 400.
Tied for second was Belize City’s Kenyah Hyde of Bernice Yorke Academy and Belmopan’s Andres Hung of Our Lady of Guadalupe with 369 points each.
Of the top performers, 17 came from the Belize District, and seven from the Cayo District, representing Bishop Martin R.C., St. Andrew’s Anglican in San Ignacio and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Belmopan.
Regarding the overall scores, students on average scored 58% in English, 52% in Math, 61% in Social Studies and 71% in Science.
English scores were up a few points from last year but Math, Social Studies and Science all saw scores dropping, with Social Studies seeing a seven point drop.
Scores have remained relatively stable over the last ten years but according to the Ministry of Education it is concerned that there are many who are not performing especially in English and Math.
7,245 students sat all or part of the PSE, from the 7,551 who registered.
The Ministry says it is addressing the issue with a program targeting teaching Math skills funded by the IDB and to be spread across the country.
