Tuesday, July 15, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Former marketing executive for SMART, 34 year old Renan Briceño Jr., will be told on Wednesday whether he is guilty of the murder of 19 year old Dale Tillett.
Tillett was shot to death in the parking lot in front of Palm Island Nightclub on the Philip Goldson Highway on New Year’s Eve of 2011.
Briceño is being represented by Senior Counsel Ellis Arnold and David Morales, while the Crown prosecutors are Shanice Lovell and Portia Staine.
Justice Troadio Gonzalez is hearing the case alone without a jury.
The Crown’s primary evidence is that of deceased witness Albert “Long John” Fuentes, one of four men viciously killed in an apartment at Plues and Dean Streets in January of 2013, whose statement was admitted into evidence.
He told police that he and Tillett were at the nightclub and he had already gone outside to wait for Tillett when he heard the sound of gunfire.
Suddenly he saw his friend fly into the air and then hit the ground, and a man he said was Briceño stand over him and fire another shot.
Tillett was shot in the head and buttocks.
From the witness stand, Briceño said he had left his licensed firearm with companion Julio Caceres and gone into the nightclub.
He claimed that as he was leaving a fight began and Fuentes hit him in the head, causing him to fall to the ground and become dizzy for about 30 seconds.
Then he heard gunshots and Caceres telling him to run.
Briceño said he took cover behind a parked vehicle and as Caceres was handing him his weapon, police came and took it away from him.
Constable James Jones, who stripped Briceño of his firearm, testified that the gun barrel felt “hot” to him, as if it had recently been fired.
One other man, Brandon Tillett, was injured but it was not clear who shot him.
