Wednesday, July 16, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: In memory of a life cut off before reaching full potential, the Ariel Rosado Memorial Education Foundation was established to promote the education of the future leaders of Belize.
The popular cyclist and promising attorney was killed in a massive traffic accident at Mile 2 on the Philip Goldson Highway.
Today, his father and the president of the Foundation, Dr. Alvaro Rosado, told us this was the most fitting way to both honor him and give life to his dreams for Belize.
It was something he participated in with his family, and he had plans to do even more before his untimely death.
The Foundation has capped its awards at 30, including dedicated scholarships and grants for sailing.
Frequently, according to Foundation trustee Wendy Assad, in its first two years the problem has been weeding out those less deserving of scholarships, when all applicants have been equally deserving.
It is something she said the Foundation will be working on.
She also noted that there will be established a resource center to benefit scholarship recipients and other students.
But there is some dissension, as the Sanchez family, which was an integral part of the formation of the Foundation, has a different vision in mind.
Dr. Rosado says they have held up the signing of cheques to cover tuition, fees and other expenses for scholarships and for the Foundation itself.
The source is a dispute over the future of the Foundation.
The matter is now before the courts but Dr. Rosado held out hope for a successful resolution.
17 high schoolers from the Belize, Cayo and Corozal Districts were presented with their scholarships, several of these after performing excellently in their studies.
Three other high schoolers and one university student were recognized for graduating from their studies.
Top sponsors were also recognized, including Galen University, Belize Bank International, SMART, the Belize City Council, Belize Telemedia Limited, Bowen and Bowen Limited and several prominent families who have sponsored dedicated scholarships and otherwise contributed to the Foundation.
