Sunday, August 3, 2014. JUAN CAAL Reporting: The Fifth Regional Fishers Forum was held in Punta Gorda town late last week.
The two-day event was coordinated by the Tri-National Alliance for the Gulf of Honduras, also known as TRIGOH and was hosted by the Toledo Institute for Development and the Environment, TIDE, at the Marian’s Bay View Restaurant in PG.
The forum provided a platform for fishes from Belize, Honduras and Guatemala to discuss a range of issues that affect them and how they can play a more involved role in conservation efforts in the Gulf of Honduras area.
Among the topic discussed was how fishers utilizing the Gulf of Honduras area can adopt sustainable fishing practices that will be mutually beneficial.
A Fisheries Department official attending the forum told reporters that his agency stands ready to work hand in hand with the fishers to address the challenges currently being faced while at the same time ensuring marine conservation.
