Incumbent councilors re-elected for Belize City UDP slate

AARON HUMES Reporting: As expected, all eight incumbent Belize City Councilors will be running again for the United Democratic Party (UDP) in next March’s municipal election in Belize City following Sunday’s internal convention held at the ITVET Compound on Freetown Road (formerly Belize Technical College).

Some 4,242 ballots were cast – an increase of 600 from the last convention in 2011 – of which 173 were rejected.

In order of their finish and votes cast at Sunday’s convention, they are: Dion Leslie (3,244); Philip Willoughby (2,893); Bernard Q. Pitts, Jr., (2,742); Dean Samuels (2,633); Alain Gonzalez (2,482); Michael Theus (2,456); Alifa Elrington-Hyde (2,253); and Kevin Singh (2,009).

Joining the slate are former councilor Hyacinth Latchman-Cuellar (2,796) and Jason Edwards (2,785). They replace Eric Chang and Roger Espejo, respectively.

Among other participants, Noreen Martinez (wife of Port Loyola area representative Anthony “Boots” Martinez) finished with 1,700 votes; Fredy Cantillano, 1, 643; Deon Sutherland, 1,630; Philip Singh, 1,443; Percy Lewis, 1,013; and Samson Jacobs, 899.

Their opponents from the People’s United Party and elsewhere are as yet undetermined.

The UDP will be going for a fourth consecutive term at City Hall, having held office there from 2006 under Zenaida Moya to the present.
