Monday, August 11, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: Not everyone has what it takes to call themselves soldiers of Belize and of the Belize Defence Force.
On Friday the national army’s ranks swelled by 72 from an initial recruit intake of 100.

But it was noted that 68 persons left the training before its end in separate groups and there was an addition to bolster the group.
BDF Brigadier General David Jones, Force Commander, says the soldiers have been put through hard, punishing physical training, as well as given the kind of knowledge to stay one step ahead, whether on the ground in Belize City, or in the bush of the Chiquibul.
He notes that they have been trained in human rights law and the law of armed conflict to avoid nasty encounters with Guatemalan peasants encroaching in Belizean territory after being told by Guatemala that our soldiers don’t respect human rights.

And while that is tough to swallow, both Brig. Gen. Jones and Former Force Deputy Commander and current CEO in the Ministry of National Security, Retired Colonel George Lovell, expressed their satisfaction that these new recruits are up to mark.
Four top recruits received special honors: Recruit Daniel Pou was Champion Field Craft; Recruit Marvin Ical was top in physical training; Recruit Benito Itch was Champion Shot, and top Champion Recruit was Angelo Wright, who

says he could never give up, even when he wanted to, because he knew today would be his reward.
And there is no rest for the Force as it prepares for Recruit Intake 59. Written entrance examinations were administered on Saturday.
The current group will be spread out across the country, mainly in Punta Gorda town and the Cayo District; after a week’s rest, these recruits will report for duty.
