Thursday, August 21, 2014. AARON HUMES Reporting: A senior member of the Barrow administration, the Junior Minister of Finance and Economic Development Santino Castillo has gone on record opining that job stress could have pushed Deputy Commissioner of Police Miguel Segura to alcohol.
Segura was arrested and charged on Tuesday for a list of charges, including manslaughter by negligence in the fatal traffic accident which claimed the life of San Jose Succotz village resident Yolanda Valencia.
Minister Castillo was not defending the actions of Deputy ComPol Segura, but explained that he has spoken discretely with several officers and has gleaned that the stresses of the job are leading some officers to turn to alcohol.
This, the Junior Minister says, does not mean that they have to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
Castillo explains that Deputy Commissioner Segura, who is suspended from active duty, is innocent of the charges levied against him until proven guilty in a court of law.
The government minister says that Segura deserves due process and that is just what the administration is giving him.
As for the day-long protest on Tuesday which shut down the George Price Highway in Succotz village for hours on Tuesday, Minister Castillo is sympathetic, saying that if a family member of his had been involved he might have done the same.
